• POETRY BY LEE JOHNSON

I'm a HUGE fan of language, and poetry has a singular appeal due to it's straightforward text-only format. It allows one to focus completely on the interplay of the words and rhymes without any distraction. Add in a graphic image or two to set the mood for each poem, and now it's on a whole new EXO level!

    A Poem to Saint Augustine

    By Lee Johnson (2023)

    Oh Saint Augustine

    I'm grateful to thee

    You gave me shelter

    And not just me

    A wicked storm

    Was cast upon we

    We're not just one

    For we are many

    From a galaxy distant,

    Where stars seldom shine

    We voyaged in search,

    For a place sublime

    From wars that rage,

    And a world set ablaze,

    We fled for our lives,

    Across a cosmic maze

    Beyond the nebulae,

    Past black holes vast,

    We journeyed with hope

    To escape the past

    In desperate pursuit,

    Of peace and some rest,

    Saint Augustine's shores,

    Welcomed us as a guest

    With spires of light

    And waters so clear,

    This sanctuary planet

    Whispered, "come near"

    Your ancient stone walls,

    And streets of coquina,

    Sheltered our souls,

    Like a celestial marina

    Oh human kin,

    With your curious eyes,

    You gazed at our form,

    With awe and surprise

    But with open hearts,

    And a trust so divine,

    You shared with us Earth,

    Took our pain unto thine

    In Saint Augustine,

    By the azure sea tide,

    We found more than refuge

    A place to reside

    The stories of old,

    And the future entwined,

    For now, Earth is home,

    And our fates are aligned

    So here in your midst,

    We stand and decree,

    Gratitude eternal,

    For sanctuary you be

    Though worlds apart,

    And from heavens we flee,

    Oh Saint Augustine,

    You set my soul free

    The Telemarketer Poem

    By Lee Johnson (2023)

    In this daily dance

    Of our modern age,

    My screen alights,

    And wires engage,

    A whisper at first,

    Then a scream assault,

    It's software driven

    But who is at fault?

    Pulses quicken,

    Not from any thrill,

    It's telemarketing voices

    That will not chill

    From phantom numbers,

    The calls emerge,

    Their droning song,

    A relentless dirge

    Calls, texts, and spam

    Form endless streams,

    Crafting crazy nightmares

    Out of lucid dreams

    Telemarketers ring

    Every day new sleaze

    The deals they bring

    Are just the tease

    Each one is a siren,

    Disturbing my night

    You'd think this guy calling

    Is looking for a fight

    The buzz, the beep,

    A message alert,

    Can't we find this guy

And put him in the dirt?

    But anonymous numbers

    Cannot be traced

    It's gotten much worse

    Than anything I've faced

    Every other minute

    My phone rings again

    Telemarketers are calling

    And they're closing in

    I feel like the prey

    Of an urban hunt

    They try me every day

    With a brand new stunt

    Begging and grifting

    A pleading insistence

    I'm finding a need

    For a clever resistance

So I bought a new toy

    It's an AI app

    It answers my phone

    Like a robo-trap

    The callers gets trapped

    In conversations

    And led around in circles

    Raising expectations

    It drags the call out

    Like 30-40 minutes

    It talks some good shit

And knows how to spin it

    The caller thinks they're talking

    To a real human being

    It fools them into thinking

    I might be quite agreeing

To buy what they are selling

    And probably buy a lot

    The caller thinks they've got

    A buyer hotter than hot

But then my app starts asking

    Question after question

It drags it all out like

    An interrogation session

By the end of the call

    The caller is distraught

    By the weirdest client

    That they never quite caught

    Angry and flustered

    By questions repeated

    They finally hang up

    Bewildered and defeated

    The time that was wasted

    Has left them quite pissed

    They finally take my number

    Off their god-damned list

    My phone has stopped ringing

    In that annoying way

    I finally have some peace

    And quiet every day

  • Loki The Crested

A Poem by Lee Johnson (2023)

Artwork Title: Loki With a Black Streak

    Media: Photo with Digital Techniques

    Loki The Crested

    By Lee Johnson (2023)

This is a poem about my cool dog Loki (now 11 years-old) whom I've had the amazing pleasure of raising since he was only four weeks old!

    In my tranquil Zen garden

    By the koi fish pond

    Lives Loki, the Crested,

    From a magical beyond

    The Chinese dynasties

    Of imperial mystery

    Cannot fully explain

    Loki's storied history

    In a quiet country town

    Where stories begin,

On the rough side of life

    In a tumbledown inn

    Sited by the dreamy

    Lancang river,

    The canine Gods

    Were kind to deliver

    Loki was born

    Together with his twin

    The Gods got it right

    Then they tried it again

    The crests of Loki

    Were the whitest ever seen,

    Contrasting to the black

    Of his brother's dark sheen

    No palace or throne

    Just a ball to chase,

    Their purpose in life?

    The ball and a race

    They'd race every day

    Just for the fun

    Starting in the morning

A run 'til the setting sun

    Simple in spirit

    With a magical touch,

    Loki gave love freely,

    The brother not so much

    Where Loki was calm

    And wise like a sage,

    His brother was a storm

    Always up in a rage

    The two of them together

    Were the story of life

    The yin to the yang

On the edge of a knife

    Every day was a fight,

    They never got along

    Loki saw the light

His brother got it all wrong

    And so went their life

    Hour after minute,

The dark twin would start a fight

To see if he could win it

It's a danger you can face

    When you're just a pup,

    But sooner or later,

    This approach catches up

    One gloomy evening,

    By the river’s rough trail,

    The dark twin ventured

    Into a dangerous fail

In the wild of the woods,

    A pack he did meet,

    Their eyes filled with malice,

    Intentions deceit

    A brawl ensued,

    Ferocious and wild,

    There by the river,

    Raw and reviled

    The dark twin fought,

    Like a demon possessed,

    But against so many,

    He was quickly oppressed

    With a final fearful howl,

    Under a harvest moon light,

    His spirit succumbed

    To the dark, cold night

    His body lay still,

    On the riverbed side,

    The pack retreated,

    And evil did subside

    Loki felt a shiver,

    In his peaceful Zen space,

    A part of him lost,

    In time’s cold embrace

    He rushed to the river,

    Where his twin lay dead,

    Tears merged in the waters

    Of the deep winding riverbed

    He sat by his brother,

    As he tried to unwind,

    When suddenly a swirl

    Of energy entwined

The spirit of the dark one

    Melded with Loki's light,

    A bond formed in merger,

Like a bullet in a gunfight

    Now Loki’s crest

Bore a streak of dark mane,

    A symbol of unity,

    Born out of pain

    A blend of contrasts,

    Together as one,

    Their souls now united,

    And discord undone

    He returned to the garden,

    A changed soul indeed,

With a part of his brother,

    A spirit now freed

    A blend of extremes

    I struggle to describe

    He lay by the pond,

    With a feng shui vibe

    His eyes carried stories

    Of love, loss, and strife,

    A saga of brothers,

    Transcending one life

    Now, together in spirit,

    By the koi fish pond,

    Their harmonious aura,

    Of a brother's tight bond

    In the stillness of night,

    If you listen well,

You can still hear the howl

    Of the brother that fell

In Loki's love for his brother

    You'll find emancipation

    And fuel for the fire

    Of all imagination

    Trans Twister

A Song by Lee Johnson (2023)

    In this brave new world

    Where identity's a game,

    Some find the box

    Doesn’t match the name,

    Candy Land's colors,

    Bright and clear,

    Yet some souls find

    No labels near

    Twister's spinner

    Points the way,

    Red or blue?

You can have it your way

    Just as one might find

    Their spot in life

    Some get a husband

    And others get a wife

    Monopoly houses,

    Hotels, and land,

    Yet who we are

    Isn’t always planned,

    The Chance card drawn,

    For an inner quest,

    Just “Pass Go,” and be

    Your authentic best

    Uno's wild cards

    Change the flow,

    Like gender's spectrum,

    It’s a purple glow

    A heart, a club,

    Or even a spade,

    It’s how you feel,

    Not how you're made

    Jenga blocks,

    they stack up high,

    Some truths take off,

    And touch the sky,

    But when they fall,

    And all is bare,

    Love remains,

    A game that is fair

    In this grand game

    Of life and laughter,

    Let's be kind

    To those coming after

    And just remember,

    Trans or cis,

    I know it's wild

    That it's come to this

    But whether you think

    You are ladies or misters,

    Brother don't forget

    That we’re all just sisters

    Brother Sun, Sister Moon

A Song by Lee Johnson (2023)

    Brother Sun

    Crossing the sky

    Circling close

    And dropping by

    The zenith comes

    Exactly at noon

    But never too close

    For Sister Moon

    As the day grows long

    And dusk has spread

    Then Brother Sun

    Can lay down his head

    That moment in time

    When daylight fades

    Comes Sister Moon

    In silver cascades

    Her radiant beauty

    It mesmerizes

    She's very familiar

    But always surprises

    White as the snow

    And shines like a star

    She's never too close

    But always too far

    (Chorus)

    Brother Sun, Sister Moon

    Like spring is to autumn

    And December to June

    Brother Sun, Sister Moon

I'll sing if you want me to

    Sing you a tune

    In day upon night

    And night upon day

    Always apart

    And apart they must stay

    In orbit they flow

    Around each other

    The nocturnal moon

    And her day-bound brother

    Perpetually dancing

    And always in time

    It's very much like

    A celestial rhyme

    Where touching's forbidden

    And distance must keep

    It's a kinship quite hidden

    That runs very deep

    In the heavens they wander,

    But never draw near,

    Their laughter is a song

    Only they can still hear

    Orbiting endlessly

    In the cosmic sweep,

It's the love of a sibling

    And a promise to keep

    Brother Sun, Sister Moon

    Like spring is to autumn

    And December to June

    Brother Sun, Sister Moon

I'll sing if you want me to

    Sing you a tune

    The Flirting Poem

    By Lee Johnson (2023)

Oh, a wink and a smile,

    A teasing glance,

    In the game of flirtation,

    We'll dance the dance,

With a flick of your hair

    And a smile just right

    We can play this game

    From morning 'til night.

    A nudge and a giggle,

    A look that's sly,

    With a playful jest,

    We both know why.

    It's a bit of a tease,

    A playful test,

    Flirting's a game

I can play with the best.

    In a crowded room,

    Our eyes might meet,

    A subtle smile,

    Ooh, isn't it sweet?

    A knowing look

    And a playful touch,

    When you do it right

    It's a lovely rush

    A text or two

    With emoji winks,

    I'll tiptoe around

    What your boyfriend thinks,

    When our eyes connect,

    Thoughts run astray

    It makes me wonder

    How you like to play

    But let's not forget,

    Be kind, not cruel,

    In this game of love,

    An unspoken rule,

    With hearts on the line,

    I tread with care,

    It's never been about

    An illicit affair

    So here's to the flirt,

    the wink, and the tease,

    It's an artful game

    Not a heart disease

    To play it just right

    Takes a bit of finesse,

    A tap and a turn,

    It's love's GPS!

    A Mid-Summer's Love Dream

    By Lee Johnson (2023)

    In a dance of hearts,

    Spun by time's deft hand,

    With echoes of memories,

    Footprints in the sand

    Let me sketch for you

    My sanguine delight,

    A tale of love profound,

    Star-kissed in the night

    "Do tell me, my darling,"

    I humbly seek,

    "How can I love you

    better this week?"

    In words soft and gentle,

    We exchange our bliss,

    Anointed by the whisper

    Of a six-second kiss

Of how I first met you,

    Of heartbeats I speak,

    In a sea of strangers,

    In a store outré chic

    Your eyes were magical,

    Your smile like the sun,

    Surprised you existed

    You're unlike anyone

    I dream of the ways

    That we savor each kiss

    And our language of love

    Much more than this

And while we're not yet versed

    In each other's dark arts

    The music we make

    Will rewrite the star charts

    I vow not to assume,

    Nor cast a wrong notion,

    My love isn't tidal,

    But a deep, boundless ocean

    Forgiveness, my darling,

    Comes not as a demand,

    But as the gentle hold

    Of an understanding hand

    Seeking to understand,

    Not merely agree,

    My love is no cage,

But a life that is free

In our dance, I let you lead

    With your cadence divine,

    Your alone time I respect,

    Love doesn't confine

    To lift your burdens,

    A promise sincere,

    In joy and in sorrow,

    I'll always be near

    Working my issues,

    Like a silent prayer,

    A better version of myself,

    Every day that we share

    In this dance of love,

    It is you who sways,

    Leading our dance

    Through life's twisting maze.

    My sensual lover,

    My heart's chosen song,

    In a magical love dream,

    Where we both belong

    By Lee Johnson (2023)

    Oh wicked man,

    yuh hear me plea,

    A curse upon yuh,

    Dis I decree

    In de shadows of night,

    I cast me spell,

    A voodoo curse,

    from de depths of hell

    Yuh tink yuh powerful,

    Full of might,

    But me powers strong,

    Cos me own de night

    Yuh evil ways,

    Done reach me ear,

    So now me call

    Upon de spirits near

    De fire burn hot,

    It makes yah sweat,

    Yuh sins, dem gwan

    Catch me upset

    De spirits rise,

    Dey heed me call,

    To bring justice,

    Dey answer all

    De rivers run red,

    De earth quakes deep,

    Yuh heart, it trembles,

    Yuh soul it weeps

    Each step yah take,

    Be filled with dread,

    For voodoo curses

    Follow where yah tread

    Yuh words, dey twisted,

    Yuh heart, it black,

    But I send me spirits

    To strike yah back

    Wid pins and needles,

    I pierce yah skin,

    Bring yuh pain,

    Release yuh sin

    Yuh wicked deeds,

    Dem come to light,

    No place to hide,

    No chance to fight

    De voodoo spirits,

    Dey close yuh in,

    Yuh pay de price,

    Yuh suffer sin

    So wicked man,

    Repent yuh ways,

    Or face de wrath,

    For all yuh days

    De voodoo mon,

    Me hold de key,

    To curse yuh soul,

    Me curse upon yuh,

    Wicked and strong,

    May yuh know sorrow,

    Yuh whole life long

    To bring yah justice,

    And watch yah fall

A Poem for the Home Team

    By Lee Johnson (2023)

    We came from the heart

    Of our community

    Raised up in a life

    With a destiny

    After summer comes the fall

    Brother we grow tall

    Practice twice a day

Wouldn't have it any other way

We'll see you on the pitch

Get ready for a game which

    Destroys your battle plan

Misconceived as soon as it began

We set the bar much higher

    By turning up the fire

This game is what we're living for

    And winning every single war

Let's hear it for our Home Team

We always give a fair chance

    To every single batter

To grab a bat and take a swing

    And make it really matter

    Every game's a learning lesson

In all the ways we teach

We swing and hit beyond our reach

And leave your team in tatters

    Through laughter, tears, and sweat

    Friendships formed we don't forget

To raise a cheer, crystal clear

For all the friends that we hold dear

    Another winning season

    And better than the last

The fight is on and moving fast

    Your future is the past

Let's hear it for our Home Team

Our jerseys are adorned with pride,

We sprint, we dive, we soar, we glide

    Embracing challenge pound for pound

    For hometown glory, we're renowned

Through sweat and sacrifice we strive

In every game we come alive

On the field we take our stance

    In chasing victory we advance

With pride we stand as one

    Through every game we've won

The bond we share forever locked

In victory of the teams we rocked

The roaring crowds give us strength

    Pushing forward any length

Through thick and thin, standing tall

    Never falter, never fall

In winning games the cheers resound

Our triumphs are a joy profound

In defeat we learn and rise anew

    Replay ready, strong and true

On fields of dreams we stand united

    Celebrating and excited

In glory we all live the dream

    And celebrate our Home Team

And so, sing it loud, sing it proud

Let's hear it for our Home Team!!

    The Poem of The Crüxshadows

    By Lee Johnson (2023)

    From the empire of dusk

    In a shadowy reign

    A darkness weaves

    An enchanting campaign

    A melody emerges,

    Piercing the light

    A symphony rises

In the dark of the night

    From the depths of

    A magically haunted dream,

    Lives a band of souls

    Of a noir extreme

    The Crüxshadows,

    In legend, not myth

    Sire music transcending

    The now and herewith

    Their leader, Rogue,

    A troubadour bold,

    With a voice that echoes

    Of tales untold,

    He sings of love,

    Of loss, of pain,

    And the eternal struggle

    We strive to maintain

    Jen "Pyromantic"

    On the ivory keys,

    Her melodies dance

    On a midnight breeze,

    With drumsticks in hand,

    Ms. Lackey commands

    A rhythm winterborn

    In the the badlands

    JoHanna Moresco

    Channels Brigid's axe,

    Her strings whisper secrets

    On the darkest of tracks

    And David Russell Wood,

    Another violinist,

    Together, their melodies

    Magically menace

    Ms. Whitford's guitar,

    A weapon of sound,

    Every strum that she makes,

    Perfection is found.

    She takes to the edges,

    A dance to the abyss,

    Driven like snow

    And a black lipstick kiss

    Through moonlit nights

    And starlit skies,

    Their melodies soar,

    And I realize,

    The songs of the band

    Possess me with flair

    A magical strand

    For a soul in repair

    Through trials of life,

    They stand as a guide,

    A beacon of light

    Where the dark can subside,

    In each new song,

A fusion of pleasure and pain,

    The Crüxshadows rise

    To a transcendent plane

    Clearly masters

    Of a nocturnal art,

    I find in their music

    An inspiring new start

    I'm enchanted to find

    I'm growing quite fond

    Of a darkness that reigns

    In a harmonious beyond

So raise a toast in the air,

    Let spirits take flight,

    As the Crüxshadows summon

    The strength of the night

    The wicked and wanting,

    Your attention must heed,

    For divine intervention

And a chance to be freed

    The Neighborhood Poem

    By Lee Johnson (2023)

    Right next door to me

    Lives a mean, nasty troll

    He lives down the block

    Just a short little stroll

    Neighbors ... they come

    In all shapes and sizes

    But wait, there's Traci,

    And all her surprises

    Traci's only in 10th grade

    She just got her learner

    Her grades are a mess

    But it doesn't concern her

    Every day in my neighborhood

    Is filled with straight actors

    Load after load

    Of complicating factors

    There's a couple, their garden

    A seething decay

    They moved in last year

    And won't go away

    And the boisterous family,

    Their laughter all screams

    They need to shut up

    And stop the extremes

    While the troll devours

    All sense of civility

    I find Traci's nature

    A fun pliability

    But things get strange

    In the neighborhood

    When old weird Harold

    Comes out of the wood

    He's gotten much stranger

Than we thought that he could

    He's up to no good

    In all likelihood

    And Traci, with her learner's

    Permit in hand

    Is amusingly pleasant

    And much in demand

But I don't think she gets

    What the learning's about

    When she looks at me

    With her cute little pout

    And that crazy couple

    With the gardening mess

    Just seem to enjoy

    Any racial distress

    With such strange fruit

    Their garden enlarges

    It's a wonder they're not

    Facing criminal charges

    And the troll's ugly wife

    Makes him look debonair

    When they are together

    It's quite a big scare

    It's hard to imagine

    How they ever got hitched

    It must be a curse

    And likely bewitched

    But this is where

    l live today

    It's my neighborhood

    Won't you come to play?

    If you come today

    We'll have so much fun

    By tomorrow I'm sure

    We'll be needing a gun

    The Heartbreaker's Poem

    By Lee Johnson (2023)

    In a world of hearts

    Both fragile and tough,

    There walked a rogue,

    A master of love's bluff

    With his dashing good looks

    And devilish grin,

    A breaking of hearts,

    His primary sin

    He charmed all the ladies

    With smooth-talking ways,

    Leaving them breathless,

    And lost in a daze

    Words spun like silk,

    A tantalizing art,

    A masterful painter

    With every new start

    He played a fast game,

    A virtuoso of deceit,

    Whispering promises,

    Each one very sweet

    But deep down inside,

    A yearning remained,

For a love true and real,

    A soul deeply pained

    Oh, the women adored him,

    And helped with the pain

    Hopelessly enchanted

    By his seductive refrain

    But deep down inside,

    Behind forest green eyes

    Lay a fragile soul,

    Growing tired of the lies

    For you see, my friends,

    This rogue had a tale,

    A wounded heart

    That was yet to prevail

    He sought out affection,

    But had little luck,

    And lacking connection

    A love never struck

    He yearned for connection,

    A love that would stay,

    But commitment, it seemed,

Was a high price to pay

    Behind a rogue's mask,

    His secret was sure,

    A yearning for love

    And not just a lure

    But Fate, she's a clever

    Mistress, you see,

    With lessons to teach

    Even the likes of me

    She sent me a lady,

    A major surprise,

    A strong sweet woman

    With a love that defies

    She saw through my charm,

    And roguish veneer,

A love that would live on

    As it would appear

    She filled in the pieces

    With patience and grace,

    Mending the fragments

    I couldn't replace

    Through laughter and tears,

    We danced right in tune,

    Building a deep love

    That would conquer and bloom

    That rogue, once a wanderer,

    Had now found a home,

    And happy to claim

    That love as his own

So, let this be a lesson,

    A tale to remind,

    Beneath every rogue,

    There's a heart that's confined

    In the realm of love,

    Let us all be aware,

    That even the broken

    Can love and repair

    A Santa Barbara Love Poem

    By Lee Johnson (2023)

In Santa Barbara, a realm of chance

A day unfolds Love's fateful dance

    Morning tides whisper tales untold

As dreams of meeting you unfold

    Dew-kissed hopes glisten the air

In coastal heaven, love is the dare

With the fog lifted, possibilities arise

To cross paths with a love surprise

Birds serenade a song of fate

Guiding hearts toward a destined mate

    Santa Barbara is love's decree

The day brings love for you and me
